TikTok: Beyond the Social Media App

For some, TikTok has become an escape and the way of living since the novel coronavirus became a global pandemic and everyone were forced to stay home – to prevent the virus from spreading.

Over the course of the pandemic which started in late January of 2020, more and more people have realized the grand scale of health risks from the what we know now as COVID-19.

And the authorities ultimate protocol to save human lives is to enforce quarantine or lockdown to prevent the disease from spreading and help flatten the curve.

In the Philippines, the government imposed Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and nearby provinces in Luzon. Later, as the disease was hardly contained, Malacañang declared extension of ECQ as far as in some regions in Visayas and Mindanao.

As of the moment, the ECQ in Metro Manila, Region 3, and most part of the country will have to wait until May 15, 2020 for the lifting of the quarantine ordinance. Other provinces are already in General Community Quarantine – meaning, that some essential stores amd establishments; businesses; and work are back and allowed to open (but with still limitations).

People who are staying at home, probably bored and have watched all the K-dramas on Netflix, have found recluse in the mobile app, TikTok.

With nore than 100M+ downloads, TikTok is the leading destination for short-form mobile video with the mission to inspire creativity and bring joy. The global pandemic seemingly brought TikTok to its new level of popularity

But with this popularity, TikTok is also a target of controversies and issues. Issues like privacy, child-protect, and soft pornography are the most talked about topics on this app, especially to those who are not on TikTok yet.

But there are good reasons why TikTok has become a beacon of everyone’s hope.

Apart from getting entertained, TikTokers are kept in the loop of what’s happening aroumd the world with each fellow creators inviting subscribers to their hometown, their birthplace, and all the way to their homes.

TikTok also helped in keeping the family together in times of crisis by posting their activities and funny meme worthy videos.

Creators also help in sharing safety tips and reminders about COVID-19 through their videos.
