Why Disaster Preparedness Is Important Among Filipinos

For three consecutive years, Cebuana Lhuillier continues to push for disaster preparedness awareness among Filipinos, to keep tabs on educating people the ropes of survival when disaster strikes.

Cebuana Lhuillier, the Philippines’ largest microfinancial services provider, gathers the country’s industry experts in disaster management, risk reduction, and post-disaster rehabilitation on July 4 at Shangri-La The Fort Manila for the ‘2018 READY Disaster Resilience Forum – Disaster Resilience Begins With Me.’
This year’s forum focused on the need for everyone including the first responders; communities and families; and individual Filipinos to be ready and be fully equipped to take on an active role in disaster resilience.

“When we started Disaster Resilience Forum two years ago, our vision was to build a nation of resilient Filipinos – armed with the information and know-how to protect and help others during times of disasters and natural calamities,” said Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.
The forum was broken down into three panels: First Things First: How Resilient Are Our First Responders?; Moving Forward: How Do We Strengthen Our Communities’ Resilience?; and On To The Next Step: How Can Every Filipino Be Ready And Help?
News anchor and program host Tony Velasquez moderated the event’s forum.
To further reinforce its disaster resilience advocacy, Cebuana Lhuillier launched OurHelp, a donation site where donors can ensure infividuals or communities who do not have access yo or means to get insurance coverage for as low as one dollar of P53. OurHelp is an offshoot of the company’s National Pilipino Ptotektado Day, a month-long campaign that helped insure oje million Filipinos in 2016.

Disaster Preparedness Tips

  • Never assume and underestimate the extent of disaster.
  • Don’t get carried away by rumors and/or do not spread rumors. Only rely on verified information from legitimate sources.
  • Obey orders from the authorities/government.
  • When disaster strikes, don’t panic. Stay calm.
  • Stay focused to keep your senses alert and functioning.
  • Before helping others, make sure that yourself is safe and capable to do so.
  • Lives and safety should be prioritized above anyhting else.

The signing of manifesto followed after by disaster resilience forum convenor and partners as an official declaration of their commitment to raise the level of awareness, preparedness, and sustainability of resources of each and every Filipino against the impacts of disasters and calamities.
